We recently were able to trap all the kittens that the now neutered Mamma Black had. All four. And, it turned out that all four were male. What are the odds?
And, we were put in touch with a woman...a teacher here in town, but she also is a volunteer with an organization that helps to find home for found cats and dogs.
So, we kept all four kittens in two cages in our cantina, a separate space next to our house. They were off the floor on packed boxes and also covered with fleece throws and an old comforter to keep them warm. The cages were cleaned up each day and the kittens were given fresh food and water.
After some days, we heard from the rescue gal. Someone wanted one, maybe two of them. Good news!!! Of the four, the black and the gray ones were the most responsive to human interaction. The two tabby patch and white ones were standoffish and slinked back when we attempted to play with them.
We decided to move them into our courtyard for easier access. It's just nicer in there, there are lights and we can open the door for sunlight to shine in. It helped us to socialize the two willing ones more.
Finally, the day came. Someone was coming. Actually, the whole family came!!! An older woman, her husband, their daughter and granddaughter. They had their own trasporto - carrier. Excellent!
They all came into the cortile, along with the local gal, and the woman decided she liked the little gray kitten. Just him. Not little black. I was happy AND sad. I could feel the tears welling up. She asked me if I was sad, and I said "No, I'm happy!" but I was honestly quite torn.
They live about 20 miles away and we were updated very quickly. Little "Tom" was adjusting quite well.
We still had three others to deal with. They were getting antsy. It was decided that we had to let them out, they had been cooped up for a long time. The splotchy ones tore out the door at warp speed. The little black kitten....didn't want to go. !!!!!!
So, we put him back in the cage and brought him inside to rest on our cedar chest in the entryway. Naturally, all of our cats got wigged out. Percy most of all. Appetites fell off. There was some hissing, But, we finally got another call. Someone DID want the black kitten!!! Yay!!
By the time he was ready to go, we were both playing with him and able to handle him. He even sort of tried to wiggle out of the cage when the door was open. He was adorable, a real purr meister and he loved to play. The little sweetie never used his claws, either.
This time the volunteer lady came. That was a bit odd, but it turns out the adoptive parents are all the way in Tuscany!! On the other side of Italy! So, he was being transported to Chieti, to a vet there, and being picked up the following day.
I thought of him constantly and I worried. But, Zazu (!!) is loved. And we have had multiple pictures of him getting cuddled and played with. He has a scratching post with hanging balls and a perch on top! He still has the "mouse" he fell in love with while he was here. Buona fortuna, Zazu!!!
I am so happy for each of them. They are house cats, safe and sound.
